Washington Reports Great Quality, Lower Yield for 2019 Wine Grape Harvest

first_imgFacebook ReddIt AdvertisementSEATTLE (March 26, 2020) – Washington State’s wine grape harvest came in smaller compared to previous years, but the quality of the fruit picked was very high. The Washington State Wine Commission’s annual Grape Production Report, compiled with information provided by all Washington State wineries, showed 201,000 tons were harvested in 2019, a 23% decrease compared to the previous year.“Mother Nature served a series of unfortunate frost events throughout the state in early to mid-October,” said Steve Warner, President of Washington Wine. “Many winemakers and growers had already picked most or all of their fruit before the frosts, but for sites carrying higher yields, there was a good amount of fruit left unpicked due to concerns about frost damage.”Overall, the growing season was slightly cooler when compared to recent years, but on par with historical 20-year averages.“Although a smaller harvest, farmers reported ultra-high quality in the fruit that did come in,” Warner said. “The cooler temperatures equated to lower overall sugar accumulation and higher acidities, which has a lot of winemakers excited about the 2019 vintage.”According to the grape report, Cabernet Sauvignon is still king in Washington at 53,740 tons or 27% of the total. Chardonnay was second at 33,540 tons or 17% of the total. Riesling, Merlot and Syrah rounded out the top five, which altogether equated to more than 80% of the crop. Red varieties accounted for 60% of the total production, which has remained roughly consistent over the past three years. Every variety saw a decrease in tons crushed in 2019 with the exceptions of Grenache and Pinot Noir, which each saw a small increase.Farmers received an average of $1,315 per ton, which was an 8% increase over the previous year. Petit Verdot continues to receive the highest average price per ton at $1,876.The following documents are available on the Washington Wine website:2019 Wine Grape Production Report2019 Vintage Overview2019 Wine Grape Harvest – Key StatsAbout the Washington State Wine Commission:      The Washington State Wine Commission (WSWC) represents every licensed winery and wine grape grower in Washington State. Plan being formulated to Merge JCF and ISCF

first_imgPlan being formulated to Merge JCF and ISCF National SecurityApril 2, 2012 FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmail Minister of National Security, Hon. Peter Bunting, has informed that a plan is being formulated to guide the implementation of the proposed merger of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and the Island Special Constabulary Force (ISCF). “I’ve asked the Commissioner (of Police) to develop what would be a plan for merger, and that plan should address a number of things – what are the benefits, what are the costs, how the integration would in fact take place and all matters related to a smooth merger taking place,” he said. Mr. Bunting was addressing the 25th Annual General Conference of the ISCF Officers’ Association at the Jamaica Conference Centre, downtown Kingston on Friday, March 30. The Minister explained that the merger was being considered as part of a larger vision to modernise the structures of policing and was not due to any concern for the professionalism of the ISCF or its leadership. “We are exploring that direction because we see it consistent with the long term direction that this administration has for the police and I ask you to keep an open mind to it,” he urged, pointing out that part of the mandate of the Commissioner in developing the plan was to consult with all who will be affected, should the merger take place. Mr. Bunting further pointed out that the JCF Act was an archaic 1867 piece of legislation which positioned the JCF “as a sort of para-military organisation”, but that the time has now come to establish a modern police authority, and in doing so, effect changes to the legislation governing the police. “We felt we needed a modern police authority and in the course of establishing this new police authority, eventually the legislation would replace many pieces of legislation that we now have,” he said. The Minister noted that this would involve “doing away with the JCF, the ISCF, the District Constables as coming under separate pieces of legislation and bring it under one governing statute”. The proposed merger also speaks to combining the two management structures of the force – the Police Services Commission and the Police Civilian Oversight Authority, as well as changing the name of the JCF to reflect a service oriented organisation rather than a force. Commissioner of Police, Owen Ellington said that the merger could prove favourable as “whatever benefits that accrue to the JCF in terms of modernization, capacity building, leadership development and such the like will be available to all of us because we will all be members of the same organisation.” The merger was one of the recommendations coming out of the JCF Strategic Review that was aimed at improving the services delivered by the police. LTE strength not enough to stop LG sliding into Q1 handset loss

first_imgHomeDevicesNews LTE strength not enough to stop LG sliding into Q1 handset loss Qualcomm strikes LG patent deal following spat LG LG Electronics said it shipped 5 million LTE smartphones in Q1, its biggest ever single quarter for such devices, although this was not enough to stop it recording a loss for the period. In a statement, it said that the red ink was attributable to “worsening domestic market conditions and declining ASPs resulting from intensified market competition”.LG’s business in its home country was hit by the suspension of sales by operators in South Korea, related to excessive device subsidies. The company shipped 12.3 million smartphones in the quarter, an increase of 19 per cent year-on-year, and making up 75 per cent of all devices it shipped. Its 5 million LTE devices was an increase of 79 per cent year-on-year, and means that 41 per cent of all smartphone shipments during the three months supported the high-speed network technology. The company saw a loss of KRW8.8 billion ($8.55 million), compared with a profit of KRW132.5 billion in Q1 2013, on sales of KRW3.41 trillion, up 6 per cent on KRW3.2 trillion. This marks the third consecutive loss-making period for the company, although the numbers are getting smaller.Looking forward, LG said that higher revenue is expected in the second quarter “with the release of the flagship LG G3 smartphone and wider roll-out of the mass-tier L Series III.”It said it will also improve its profitability by improving its cost competitiveness. On a group level, the company reported a profit of KRW92.6 billion, up from KRW22.1 billion in Q1 2013, on revenue of KRW14.27 trillion, up 1.2 per cent from KRW14.1 trillion. The company’s Home Entertainment unit “exceeded expectations” due to stronger sales of larger-sized TVs and a better cost structure resulting from declining material prices. This trend is expected to continue in Q2, following new model launches. Huawei leapfrogs Microsoft in mobile shipments

first_img HuaweiMicrosoft Huawei founder urges shift to software Huawei overtook Microsoft to become the world’s third largest mobile phone vendor following a “lacklustre” Q2 2015 for mobile phone shipments, according to Strategy Analytics.Global mobile shipments in total grew from 428 million units in Q2 2014 to 434.6 million in Q2 2015, representing annual growth of 2 per cent, “the industry’s weakest performance for two years, due to slowing demand for handsets in China, Europe and the US”, according to Woody Oh, director of Strategy Analytics.Huawei, however, “was the star performer” during the period after capturing a 7 per cent market share, up from 4.8 per cent for the same quarter-2014, shipping 30.6 million mobile phones to overtake Microsoft for the first time ever.“Huawei is rising fast in all regions of the world, particularly China where its 4G models, such as the Mate7, are proving widely popular,” said Ken Hyers, director at Strategy Analytics.Microsoft lagged behind, shipping 27.8 million devices for the quarter, capturing a 6.4 per cent market share, down from 11.8 per cent in Q2 2014.The company’s mobile phone vendor market share is now sitting near an “all time low”, according to Neil Mawston, executive director at the analysis company. “Microsoft continues to lose ground on feature phones”, he added.Market leader Samsung also dipped 7 per cent annually, distributing 89 million phones, and while the company stabilised volume in the high end, its lower tier models continues to face competition from rivals like Huawei in Asia.Xiaomi, which remains a major player in China, also saw slowing international and local growth, and “may struggle to hold on to its top-five global phone ranking in the coming quarters”, added Mawston.Apple, meanwhile, grew 35 per cent annually, shipping 47.5 million phones, attaining an 11 per cent market share. According to analysts, Apple outperformed as consumers in China and elsewhere upgraded to bigger-screen iPhone and 6 Plus models.Smartphones accounted for eight in 10 total shipments during the quarter, according to Strategy Analytics. Jeanna de Waal Star Files Diana Watch out Six, there are more royals heading to Broadway. On January 30, the cast and creative team of Diana gathered at the Lotte New York Palace Hotel to preview the new musical about the life of the late Diana, Princess of Wales. The show stars Jeanna de Waal as Diana, Roe Hartrampf as Prince Charles, Judy Kaye as Queen Elizabeth II and Erin Davie as Camilla Parker Bowles. The musical is created by a team of Tony winners: book writer Joe DiPietro, composer David Bryan and director Christopher Ashley. At the event, de Waal performed the song “Underestimated” from the show and talked about why she considers Diana to be an inspirational figure. “She was up against these huge odds, and rather than crumbling and dying, she buckled down and found her little nugget of light and clung to it,” de Waal explained.Diana starts off with the wedding between Diana and Charles (so look out for a recreation of that iconic wedding dress). It goes on to dramatize the Prince’s affair with Camilla who, contrary to popular assumptions, is not the baddie of the piece. “There’s an assumption she is a villain,” said Davie. “I love that in this show she is sympathetic, and you perhaps see the other side of the story and the love story that is Camilla and Charles.” Diana begins previews on March 2 at the Longacre Theatre and will open on March 31.See the photos from the event below and watch the cast explain why they want to pay tribute to Princess Diana in this new musical. from $49.00 Roe Hartrampf, Judy Kaye, Jeanna De Waal and Erin Davie Session ID: 2021-01-17:e74ba5d389b682fb818dedbc Player Element ID: vjs_video_3 OK Close Modal DialogBeginning of dialog window. Medication Assisted Treatment pilot implementation ahead of schedule

first_imgBlue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont,Community Health Centers of Burlington,Vermont Business Magazine Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont (BCBSVT) and Bi-State Primary Care Association (Bi-State) announced today they’ve implemented the first commercial payer program supporting primary care and community providers delivering support services to patients receiving Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) for substance misuse. Vermont is a leader in the Hub and Spoke model of treatment and this effort will improve an already valuable program.Starting in October, BCBSVT is piloting with Community Health Centers of Burlington (CHCB) a value-based reimbursement program extending to “wrap around” support services provided by nurse case managers and counselors. This initiative was created through the collaborative efforts of BCBSVT and CHCB leadership and staff. Together they focused on providing increased access for BCBSVT members to receive these services, which have been shown to result in reduced ER admissions and positive member outcomes, the two services said in a joint statement.Alison Calderara, CEO of CHCB said that “this pilot is designed to close a critical care gap for our patients who are struggling with addiction. The goal is to ensure the wraparound care patients need for recovery is available and sustainable. CHCB just reached a milestone of 430 patients in treatment. This partnership could not have come at a better time to help us meet the needs of Vermonters.”“We are pleased to offer these enhanced services to our members, and expect they will benefit not only the individual in recovery, but also their families and communities,” said Joshua Plavin, MD, and Chief Medical Officer at BCBSVT.In the near future, BCBSVT expects to deploy a similar model in Chittenden County and Bennington County through Community Health Teams.  Provider partners in those communities are equally at the table engaging in the development of new value-focused payment and delivery system programs.  Each community has different needs and BCBSVT is building the program to best fit the structure and needs of the patients. Eventually, BCBSVT expects to deploy the program on a broader scale through its FQHC providers and community-based models following success at these initial test sites, with the goal of expanding these services to all corners of the State. “We appreciate the hard work of BCBSVT and CHCB in developing this new collaboration, which is a great example of the opportunities Vermont has to support community-based care for the most vulnerable Vermonters,” said Georgia Maheras, Vice President Policy and Programs of Bi-State.About Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont:(link is external) Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont is the State’s only Vermont-based, not-for-profit health plan, providing coverage for about 250,000 Vermonters.
