Editor’s note: This is the seventh in a series of 14 team previews on NASCAR.com. Next up: Wood Brothers Racing on Feb. 9. A list of team previews already published is at the bottom of this story.Richard Childress RacingManufacturer: ChevroletEngine: ECR EnginesDrivers Austin Dillon, No. 3; Ryan Newman, No. 31Crew chiefs: Justin Alexander (Dillon), Luke Lambert (Newman)2017 standings: Dillon, 11th in final standings (eliminated in Round of 16); Newman, 16th in final standings (eliminated in Round of 16)What’s new: Richard Childress Racing enters 2018 as a full-time, two-car operation. Paul Menard has moved on to Wood Brothers Racing, and the team elected not to fill his No. 27 Chevrolet full time. RCR finalized a new alliance with Richard Petty Motorsports during the offseason, with the iconic RPM shop relocating to Welcome, North Carolina so the teams can work in tandem. The team also dipped into the past by re-hiring Andy Petree, a championship-winning crew chief with Dale Earnhardt at RCR in 1993 and 1994. Petree, who told NASCAR.com that Childress is “totally committed to winning,” will serve as the organization’s vice president of competition. What to watch: Both Austin Dillon and Ryan Newman are confident in their respective team’s ability to build off 2017’s playoff runs. Dillon qualified the team’s performance in 2017 as modest gains; now, he’s looking to make a big one. Key question(s): How will the team dynamic change in going from three cars to two? Will that move — and the new Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 — allow engineers to find the needed additional speed to compete for wins every week?DRIVERSAustin Dillon, No. 3 Dow Chevrolet: Dillon broke through for his first career win in 2017 — in the Coca-Cola 600, no less – and advanced to the playoffs for the second consecutive year. His finish of 11th in the standings is the best of his career. A surprise in 2017 was Dillon’s sharp dip in top-10 finishes, which went from 13 in 2016 to just four last year — tied for the lowest of his career.Jared C. Tilton | Getty ImagesThe new Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 should bring immediate speed to match Dillon’s soaring expectations.“We got our win (in 2017), and that was huge,” Dillon said. “That was one goal I had last year. I love how we finished the year as far as a consistent team. We were a consistent threat at the end of the year and had consistent finishes. Our goal is the Championship 4 this year.”Ryan Newman, No. 31 Caterpillar Chevrolet: Like his teammate Dillon, Newman also found Victory Lane in 2017 following a dry spell. His win at Phoenix in the spring was his first since 2013 (a 127-race span), and the first for Richard Childress Racing since that same season. It was a special moment in Victory Lane, one that was repeated when Dillon won in Charlotte months later, but ultimately didn’t lead to success in the postseason.Jared C. Tilton | Getty ImagesThe veteran’s seven top-five finishes, though, are reason for optimism. It was his highest personal total since 2011.“From my standpoint, we had the opportunity to take the best of the best people, put them all together,” Newman said of the changes at RCR. “We have a couple small personnel changes on the 31 side, but the core group of guys as far as the crew chief and the race engineers are all the same. And our feather in our cap is the Camaro ZL1, because we feel as a design and development piece it is made to be better than what we had last year.”PREVIOUS TEAM PREVIEWSFeb. 1: Front Row MotorsportsFeb. 2: Richard Petty MotorsportsFeb. 3: Leavine Family RacingFeb. 5: JTG Daugherty Racing Feb. 6: Germain Racing Feb. 7: Roush Fenway Racing

Shelter workers say it really calms down the dogs, but Barbabella says it does more good for her than it does for the dogs.Barbabella was unaware that photos of herself reading to dogs were spreading on the internet until the media started calling. A fellow shelter volunteer was so touched by the sight of her reading ‘Biscuit and the Little Pup’ to an old pit bull that she snapped a photo (above) and posted it on Reddit.“She was so patient with the dogs—I watched her read to several—and they just loved being petted by her,” Kathleen Costello told TODAY.Inspired by Barbabella’s style of volunteering, the shelter has announced that a read-a-thon is being organized for September. The plan is to get kids involved, reading to the animals, with the added benefit of reading practice for the two-leggers, along with plenty of friendly companionship for the four-leggers.(READ more at TODAY) — Photos: Kathleen Costello; (left) Amy Crawford, West. This year they decided to go bigger by encouraging the whole world to participate in the singing – which will take place simultaneously, at 8am South African time.A special tributeOn 29 May hundreds of people, among them TV, radio and sports personalities, gathered in Sandton for the recording of the song. Also present were basic education minister Angie Motshekga; Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, the minister of home affairs; and Anitha Soni, trustee of the board of directors at Brand South Africa.Lead SA, the department and the foundation, supported by the Shout Foundation, Proudly South African and Brand South Africa, partnered to get the world movement going to sing the song and engage in 67 minutes of community service.Mobile provider Vodacom has also donated their infrastructure to provide a platform for people to download the song – by texting ‘Madiba’ to 44009, people will be able to download the song via a link sent in a reply.“We are exploring the possibility of breaking a social media world record. We want to mobilise South Africans and the world to sing and pledge their 67 minutes,” said Abramjee.South African Rugby has also pledged its support, saying that national team the Springboks, along with thousands of spectators who will be present at the test match against England in Port Elizabeth on Saturday 23 June, will also sing to Madiba.Footballs fans will also be getting involved. The song will be sung ahead of matches scheduled on the day, as well as half-time on the following Saturday in Durban and Cape Town respectively, when local teams take on Manchester United FC.Viewers of DStv will also be treated to the song as satellite operator MultiChoice pledged to play the recording on all its channels at 8am on the day.“This is in the true spirit of doing it for our country and honouring Madiba,” said Abramjee, thanking Imitiaz Patel, CEO of Multichoice.Goodwill and support for MandelaOver 100 community radio stations will play the song, while the Caxton and Independent newspaper groups will lend their support by promoting the movement in the lead up to the day.Lead SA and its partners have further invited companies, universities, NGOs, government departments and individuals to join in, while also calling on foreign media to put aside the differences and support the initiative. They have also called on representatives of foreign organisations in South Africa to assist in getting 67+ countries to join the initiative and sing happy birthday at 8am, their local times, and also to get their people to do 67 minutes of community service.Mandela’s grandson Luvuyo Mandela said he and his family will hand out blankets and plant trees as part of their 67 minutes project. South African news presenter Leanne Manas also assured her 67 minutes of goodwill and encouraged others to do the same.CEO of the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory Achmat Dangor said no government can meet all the challenges by itself and the citizens of South Africa need to be active in making a difference.“When civil society realises its strength, it can make a difference,” added singer Kabelo, who is part of Shout.Speaking at the launch, Miller Matola, CEO of Brand South Africa, one of the biggest partners of the initiative, said that in the spirit of Ubuntu, the people in his organisation are ready to roll up their sleeves and do their part for Mandela.94+ schools projectThe primary objective of the 94+ Schools Project for Madiba is to celebrate Mandela’s 94th birthday by giving hope and dignity to children at at least 94 schools across South Africa, by improving school infrastructure. The campaign to alleviate the infrastructure backlog in primary schools in poor communities across the country will make a significant contribution to fulfilling Mandela’s dream for every child in South Africa to be educated.“Let’s make his 94th birthday the magic of legends and an enduring memory,” said Abramjee.“We want to give him his best birthday present ever – the love of the world.”
