NEWHALL – Santa Clarita’s proposed assessment to buy open space around the city will be debated Thursday, 12 days before the deadline to vote. Parties on both sides of the $25-a-year fee on property owners – an assessment that will increase over the years with the Consumer Price Index – will meet at 7 p.m. at Vincenzo’s Pizza in Newhall. The Democratic Alliance for Action is hosting the nonpartisan event to review the proposed Open Space Preservation District before the July 10 deadline to mail in ballots. Bill Bailey and city Planning Commissioner Diane Trautman will speak for the assessment; Jim Farley and Sterling King will debate for the opposition. A question-and-answer period will follow. If approved by a simple majority, the 30-year tax on property owners would start at $25 a year and could be raised every year.
